Our Analysis

Don't want to pour hot water through plastic? Don't mind a heavier cone? Identical in design to our Editors' Choice winner in everything except material, the Hario V60 Ceramic Dripper is a heavy-duty dripper that brews excellent coffee. Even though the plastic V60 performed very high in our taste tests, it is believed that plastics can leach trace amounts of chemicals into water — especially when that water is hot. With the ceramic version, you get the same excellent taste that you've come to expect from Hario's unique design, but without the worry of exposure to chemicals. It is significantly heavier than the plastic version and more than twice the cost, but it is sturdier while brewing and has the potential of lasting far longer than a plastic piece.

Another option if you want a cone but don't want hot water pouring over plastic is the Cafellissimo Paperless Pour Over. It delivered similarly high scores for taste as the V60. Because this model is filterless, it does require cleaning after each use, which takes extra time and water. That said, you don't have to remember the filters or create extra waste every time you brew.

Best Application

This gourmet coffee maker is made to be used in the home; however, since it is only a single piece that does not require electricity, it can also be used for camping. It will, of course, require more careful packing and handling, but the Hario Ceramic Dripper functions just as well as the plastic dripper in a camping environment. Better actually, when you consider that it holds in heat better than the plastic version. This makes it more versatile than some of the other camping coffee makers because it allows you to buy only one coffee maker — with no compromise whatsoever in flavor — for both home and camping use. In our opinion, the ceramic version of the V60 is a worthy investment: an esteemed and delicious way to brew coffee every morning no matter where you are.
